"Place of many Possums" is (apparently) the Aboriginal meaning, but now it is a place of many varieties.
Twenty miles from its mouth, Murwillumbah is the centre of the rich fertile Tweed River Valley, the changing pattern of the scenic beauty of the countryside being unequalled in the state.
Murwillumbah is a modern and prosperous town, 14 kilometres north-east of Mt. Warning (1193 metres, click link for live webcam), and old volcanic crater, sighted and named by Captain Cook when his ship escaped being shipwrecked off Point Danger.
With the majestic sentinel of Mt. Warning standing guard, the wealth of the district is reflected in the variety of its produce; bananas and tropical fruit, sugar, dairy products and timber, being processed and milled in the area.
Tourists are attracted by a pleasant year-round climate, aided and abetted by good roads and changing panoramas from the various vantage points, all within one-day excursions from Murwillumbah. Beautiful nearby beaches provide surfing, skin-diving and fishing, and an 18-hole golf course, bowling greens, squash and tennis courts and swimming pools (currently under renovation) are available for the sports-minded.
Accommodation is provided by good hotels, motels and caravan parks in and around the town.
The Tweed Banana Festival, held every year at the end of August, and the Speed on Tweed motoring event each late September attract thousands of visitors....
